Fend For Yourself

I just got a Prodigy after strongly considering the LMF. What do you guys think about one vs. the other? I cant think of anything that the LMF can do that the Prodigy cannot.

Overall the Prodigy is a solid knife. The sheath is ugly, but after getting it I was amazed how well it holds the knife. I have no plans to jump out of an airplane, but do require that a knife stay put if I end up falling down an embankment or rocks. I think the Prodigy sheath would stay with me and not come out if I was to fall. I also have a Ka-bar warthog, which is a great blade, but wouldnt trust that sheath in a slip and fall situation. It could come loose and end up between my ribs.

I use the knife for hunting, but since it is a military knife I thought I would post in the military section.

I think you made a great pick between the two for your application. The Prodigy is lighter and more compact; the handle is smaller than the LMF II but the blade is the same size. The prodigy is full tang and the LMF is not. The LMF was designed specifically to avoid electric shock from cutting through live wire; reason for the split tang. In addition the buttcap was design to break plexiglass used in helicopters; it needed to be large and heavy for momentum and good strike surface.

For hunting I think you made a great pick. The prodigy does not have the heft the LMF has; it is great for packing and did not loose the elements of a good working knife the LMF has become for the military.

The sheath on the LMF was designed specifically to avoid accidental deployment from high "G" loads due to a vehicle crash and that same design was taken into count on the prodigy.

Thanks for the info. Some of this was new to me. I didn't realize that the Prodigy was full tang. I think that is important. I see why the LMF is not full tang and also read an article about some grunts who cut a live wire when the enemy turned on some lights near their position. I'd hate to bet my life on the LMF cutting a live wire, but they did and it paid off.

I also didnt realize that the blade was the same size. So, I end up with the same blade on a lighter knife that cant break a Blackhawk windshield in a crash....I can live with that.

Gerber blades and tools are solid and I am very happy with the purchase. I use cheap knives to cut boxes and pry things open around the house. When I hit the field to go hunting, only a high quality blade I can count on makes the trip and the Prodigy is perfect for that. My only dilemna now is the next tool I need (Ok, want).
