What is in your survival kit?

Reading the posts on Les Stroud got me thinking about survival kits. Have you ever had to use yours? What is in your set up? My kit is based on a 48-72 hour survival situation.

I have a simple one in my gear that includes the following:
-Contained in a small 4 X 5" Otter Box case (floats)
-Magnesium fire starter
-Cut up chunks of rubber tire
-Nylon sutures (use to work in the medical field)
-Bandages, band aids, gauze patch
-Ibuprofen, asprin, electrolyte powder vaccum sealed
-Gum, M&M's vacuum sealed
-Iodine chlorine tabs
-Small key chain light
-Saran wrap
-Fishing line with hooks and small pack of Berkley Power Bait vacuum sealed
-Micro compass, mirror
-Gerber Micro LST
-Extra copy of my health insurance cards, ID and Hunting license
-$10 dollar bill, four quarters

This goes in my left front pocket of my hunting jacket and is the first thing I grab when going out. In addition I pack an alumnized emergency blanket and 12' of 550 cord.

what are the tire pieces for?

Hey Tippet.

The tire pieces are for fire starting. They burn hot and for a long time even when wet being they dont absorb moisture. Only need a small bit to get a decent fire going. I use inner tube to bicycle tires; as big chunks from car tires are hard to cut and can be harder to light.

The magnesium fire starter is a must. I used to carry a lighter in my basic survival gear, but they are too unreliable. A magnesium fire starter works wet, doesnt age over time, and will always work. Great idea. Your post got me thinking that I need a better survival kit. I have a very basic one that I carry on me hunting, and a very bulky box with a bunch of miscellaneous survival gear in my truck in case I get stuck in the boonies. I need a better one to carry on me when I hit the woods. Wild Turk

mark moore in n.j. you can get by with a minimun of things. i have flashlight , bandaids , spare glasses, aspirin,candy, home made fire starter,antiseptic wipes, electric tape [for over band aids if wet]cell phone in ziplock bag,lighter, just basics.

A LED headlamp, mag fire starter, good sharp small folder, compass/mirror combo, band aids & small bandage, water pure tabs and an energy bar.

Had a chance to hear a lecture from Peter Kummerfeld, he is survival trainer and had some very good points about attitude, planning and a prepared kit.

I will be updating my kit after listening to the information he provided:
-Getting rid of the tire bits and going to petroleum jelly soaked cotton
-Getting rid of the aluminum blanket and going with something more robust
-Better signaling mirror
-Adding marking tape

try wax and dryer lint /sawdust firestarter better in hot weather or in hot hunting coat also try electric tape can be used for first aid good fire starter is steel wool and 9-volt battery

With fire and drinkable water you are 75% there. Water purification tabs are a great idea. I will add them to my kit.

I think you have a pretty complete team most likely need? nor I am so cautious that I can think of nothing else
